Stingaree and Howie flee, taking Fergus along. The clerk is mounted behind Stingaree. Suddenly seizing the bushranger's weapons, Fergus captures the outlaw and orders him to dismount. Stingaree obeys, but the next instant, in answer to his signal, the outlaw's horse throws Fergus. When the clerk regains consciousness, he finds himself bound to a post and confronting death at Stingaree's hand. The young man's nerve subsequently arouses the outlaw's admiration and he spares his life. Writing a brief account of Fergus's daring, Stingaree pins it to the post with his knife and speeds away. This note eventually saves the boy from disgrace when his employer and the troopers appear upon the scene.
